Grotto of the Purísima Virgin of Macas

Sevilla Don Bosco, Morona Santiago

Description

The Grotto of the Purísima Virgin of Macas is a heritage and religious attraction located in Seville Don Bosco. It is a cave on the banks of the Upano River, which is reached by a path with stairs in a 10 to 20 minute walk from the cantonal capital. Inside, the painting of the Most Pure Virgin of Macas is venerated and the site has become an important pilgrimage point in the middle of a natural Amazonian environment.

Local legend says that the painting of the Virgin, after being taken to a church, disappeared and miraculously returned to the cave, reinforcing devotion to the place. Every August 5, during the celebrations of the patron saint of Macas, the grotto receives a significant flow of pilgrims.
